SPAM AND HOW TO DEAL WITH IT.
Having been in the
business before Al Gore invented the Internet, I gave up on jumping email
addresses a long time ago. I got tired of reprinting my business cards,
etc with a new address. So, how do you reduce the amount of SPAM (besides
using an author's suggestion of Mosquitoes and Fire-Ants on the SPAMMERS)?
-
NEVER
reply/respond to SPAM. SPAMMERS then know they have a valid email address
and they sell it!
-
Read web site's PRIVACY
Statement. But even then...
-
...use 'free email'
(yahoo, etc) or setup another email address on your domain when
registering with/on web sites. Keep your personal email address
exactly that! Personal! For use with family, friends, business
associates etc.
-
Take the time to set up
the SPAM filters in your email program, and last (I am not one to plug
products but this thing rocks)....
-
Buy
McAfee's SpamKiller
This program works folks. It takes a few days to train it, but it is worth
the time spent. Before SpamKiller, on Monday mornings I would have easily
250 SPAM's waiting for me. Within the first 45 days of using it, I now have maybe 20. The secret? After training it, you select all SPAM in
the KILL folder, and choose 'SEND ERROR'. It replies to the sender with a
bona-fide bounce message claiming the user does not exist. Eventually the
Spam Lists drop your email off of them. You can even complain to the
originating ISP if you desire (although I have found this to be a waste of
time for most SPAMMERS as they are their own ISP).
It is a
beautiful thing to be able to fight back!
